South Alabama Speedway Opens Regular Season

By Mark Chisum

South Alabama Speedway opened the 2010 season with a Fan Appreciation Night. With great weather, a large crowd enjoyed racing with features scheduled for all of the track’s regular classes.

In the Super Stock Feature, Darryl Rudd took the lead from the pole position and led flag to flag to take the win. Ryan Redmon moved into second on the start and chased Rudd all race, but was never able to mount a serious challenge for the lead. Rudd built a three car length lead and maintained it until the checkers. Jody Henderson came from the sixth starting spot to finish third. Jason Fowler finished fourth with Corbitt Mosely fifth.

Redmon ran away from the field to win the Modified Feature. Starting from the pole, Redmon led every lap and had a straightaway lead on Heath Mills when the checkers fell. Lance Blacker followed Mills. Cameron Page was credited with fourth and Jamie Ater with fifth.

Steve Stewart led every lap to win the Vintage Feature. Stewart grabbed the lead from the pole and eased away from Jamie Ater to take the win. Jeff Rudd finished third followed by Kip Whitehead.

Cameron Henderson took the lead on the third lap and sped away from the field to take the win in the Street Stock Feature. Johnny Otto grabbed the early lead from the outside pole and led the first two circuits. Henderson built a huge lead over Otto, but that lead was erased with three laps to go when Billy Maxie lost power on the backstretch. Henderson pulled away on the restart and led Otto to the line by six car lengths. Martin Quattlebaum finished third, followed by Justin Killian and Emory Pitts.

Ricky Strickland picked up his first Roadrunner win, after the finish order was adjusted after post race inspection. Chris Yeakos led the entire race with Strickland close behind. Doug Powell was on Strickland’s bumper until having a tire go down on lap 12, bringing out the race’s only caution. On the restart, Yeakos pulled away from Strickland to take an apparent win. However, in post race inspection, Yeakos’ and third place finisher Mike Wolfe’s engines had too much compression and both were moved to the bottom of the finishing order. Strickland was awarded the win with Ricky Osborn moving to second. Danny Lee Moanaghan was third, followed by Powell and Yeakos.

In the Coyote Feature, Travis Slawson took the lead on the first lap and went on to win. With the race going green all 25 laps, Slawson steadily pulled away from second place Joseph Chandler. When the checkers fell, Slawson was a straightaway ahead of Chandler. Rusty Locklar finished third, with Brent Slawson fourth, and Daniel Monaghan fifth.

The CupLite Feature was the night’s most competitive race, with Waylon Spivey coming out on top. Chase Berry led the first lap, but Greg Adams pulled alongside on lap two. For the next three laps, the pair battled side by side with Adams leading at the line. Adams finally pulled ahead, but Spivey quickly made his way past Berry and challenged Adams. For several laps, Adams and Spivey battled side by side with Adams on the inside. Spivey beat Adams to the stripe to lead lap 15, and used a lapped car to secure the lead three laps later. Spivey survived a lap 22 restart to take a three car length win over Adams. Jack Whittle followed in third, with Berry fourth, and Zack Wallace fifth.

In the Mini Sportsman Feature, Eddy Hinson came from the tenth starting spot to take the win. Donnie Howell led the first lap from the pole, but Jason Canon grabbed the lead for the next three circuits. On lap five, Joey Cannon took control of the race. Hinson moved into second on lap nine and closed on Cannon. On lap 18, Hinson took the lead, just before the race was slowed for Joey Cannon’s wreck. On the restart, Dylan Wolfe slipped past Hinson to grab the lead. Hinson fought back and retook the lead on the next lap, only to have the yellow wave again. This time, Hinson got a good start and held Wolfe off as they headed into turn one. Hinson pulled away from Wolfe over the last four laps to take the win. Jeremy Geddings came from the 11th starting spot to finish third. Mike Wolfe was fourth and Karen Williams fifth.

South Alabama Speedway will take off next Saturday as it prepares for its first Viper Series race. The 100-lap Sidewinder 100 Pro Late Model race is scheduled for April 17. Also on the night’s schedule are features for the Modified, Street Stock, Coyote, and Mini Sportsman.
