Henderson Collects Super Stock Rattler Trophy

By Mark Chisum

The Super Stock class made up their Rattler Feature Saturday night with Cameron Henderson taking home the winner’s trophy in a race that saw extracurricular activity before and after the race.

Regan Baker and Charlie Skipper Jr. started on the front row, but began crowding and bumping each other before the race took the green flag. The tussle came to a head in turn three with Baker taking Skipper high and off the track. Skipper retaliated by ramming Baker from behind and driving over the left side of Baker’s car. Baker came back to get the last lick in by driving into Skipper on the front stretch. Skipper was able to continue, but Baker was parked for the night.

Corbitt Mosely and Scotty Anderson moved to the front and finally the race took green. Mosely jumped out to the early lead with Anderson in hot pursuit. Anderson turned the heat up after a few laps, but Mosely was able to keep him behind him each lap. Going into turn three on lap fifteen, Anderson got into Mosely and both went spinning and were sent to the rear of the field. Henderson took over the lead and took full advantage of it, pulling away from the field. Mosely and Anderson quickly made their way through the field and back to second and third positions, continuing their battle. Finally, on lap 20, Anderson was able to get under Mosely to gain the spot. By that time, however, Henderson had checked out, taking the checkered flag well ahead of Anderson and Mosely. Skipper came back to finish fourth with Waylon Spivey fifth.

In the Modified feature, Heath Mills started from the pole and led all 25 laps to take the win. Lance Blacker and Cameron Henderson battled for the runner up spot. On lap 20, Henderson was able to work his way around Blacker to grab the runner up spot. Mario Lupi finished fourth, followed by Bruce Permenter.

Chris Salter grabbed the lead from the outside pole and led all 25 laps to win the Street Stock Feature. Chris Lucas worked his way from the fifth starting spot to second on lap six to challenge Salter for the top spot. Salter eased away from Lucas only to have the lead erased with a lap 21 caution. Once again, Salter got away from Lucas to take the win. Dennis Thomas ran a strong third. Gary Davis and Billy Maxie rounded out the top five.

In the Roadrunner Feature, team mates David Daniels and Ricky Strickland battled for the win. The pair are crewmen for Late Model driver Shanky Smith, but are regular competitors in the Roadrunner class. Daniels started on the pole and grabbed the early lead, while Strickland came from the fifth starting spot to second in two laps. Strickland chased Daniels the entire race, but settled for second in the end. It was Daniels first win. Nick Petrie’s third place finish was his best. Petrie had to hold off Mark Palmer for the position. Bobby Rhodes was fifth.

The Coyote Feature was another exciting race, with Roger Wood taking the win. Rusty Locklar grabbed the early lead, coming from the third starting spot. Wood came from the eleventh starting spot to second in one lap. Locklar held Wood off for eight laps before Wood was able to work his way around the leader. Locklar kept Wood close the rest of the way, even pulling alongside on a couple of occasions, but couldn’t find his way back to the front. Wood led Locklar to the checkers to take the hard earned win. Behind them, Lee Rogers and Perry Patino were raging a battle for third. The two got together with Rogers spinning and Patino continuing on to finish and apparent third. However, track rules do not allow a last lap “spin and win” for any position, and both drivers were penalized and sent to the rear of the lead lap cars. In a lucky twist, they were the last two cars on the lead lap, so Rogers was given the third place trophy, with Patino taking fourth. Ronnie Furniss was fifth.

Dustin Monday took the lead on lap two and went on to win the Mini Sportsman Feature. Lon Howell led the first lap before the caution flew for Paul Day’s spin. Howell retired to the pits during the caution and Monday took over the point. Monday led the rest of the way to take the win. Day made his way back to second at the checkered flag. Donnie Howell was third, Keith Hutchinson fourth, and Adam Salter fifth.

Action continues on May 5 when the Modified will make up its rattler Feature. Also on the night’s schedule are features in the Street Stock, Roadrunner, Coyote, CupLite, and Mini Sportsman classes. The Speedway also announced a Late Model Fan Appreciation Night for May 19.
