Reese Picks Up First Win at SAS

By Mark Chisum

Gordon Reese picked up his first win at South Alabama Speedway, winning the Coyote Feature Saturday night at the Kinston oval.

Reese started from the pole and led all 25 laps to claim the victory, but he had to hold off a couple of strong challenges before claiming the win. Joseph Chandler was the first to challenge Reese’s spot, but Reese was up to the task. Lee Rogers pulled up to Chandler’s bumper and Chandler had to turn some of his attention to his new competitor. With Chandler and Rogers fighting for second, Reese was able to stretch his lead to three car lengths. Rogers was able to work his way past Chandler and quickly closed the gap on Reese. Rogers pressured Reese for five laps before beginning to fade back to Chandler. Reese eased away to victory, while Chandler slipped inside Rogers on the final lap to take second spot. Jason Monaghan was fourth with Rusty Locklar fifth.

In the Super Stock Feature, Jody Henderson took the lead on lap six and went on to take the win. Corbitt Mosely took the early lead from the pole followed closely by Brian Martin and Henderson. As the field exited turn two on lap six, Mosely car suddenly lost power and Martin had nowhere to go. He climbed the left rear of Mosely and rode down the left side of Mosely’s, ending his night. Henderson took over at that point and built a comfortable lead over the field. Redmon had to work his way past Cameron Henderson before trying to reel in the leader. Redmon moved into second on lap 13, and began slicing into Henderson’s lead. Redmon got to within 3 car lengths of the leader before the checker flew. Cameron Henderson was third followed by Jason Fowler and Mosely, who had made repairs to his car and returned to the race.

Heath Mills picked up another win in the Modified class. Mills took the lead on lap six and led the rest of the way to take the win. Lance Blacker was second, followed by Randy Herrick and Lester Ingram.

Martin Quattlebaum picked up the win in the Street Stock Feature. Although Quattlebaum was credited with a win earlier due to a disqualification, this was Quattlebaum’s first time to take the checkers first. Dennis Thomas grabbed the early from the third spot, but Quattlebaum battled back to take the lead on lap three. Once out front, Quattlebaum eased away to take the checkers. Billy Maxie was second with Thomas third, and Cameron Henderson fourth.

Chris Yeakos led flag to flag to take the win in the Roadrunner Feature. Yeakos built a very comfortable lead on the field and cruised home for the win. Mike Wolfe took an emotional second place. Wolfe’s wife passed away Saturday morning, but at her request, Wolfe raced Saturday night. Ricky Strickland followed in third with Danny Monaghan and Paul Rhodes in fourth and fifth.

In the Mini Sportsman Feature, Cameron Henderson took the lead on lap 3 and held off a late race challenge from Eddy Hinson to take the win. Jason Cannon led the first two laps before Henderson took control. While Henderson was cruising out front, Hinson was having to work his way through the field. Hinson made it to second by lap seven, but Henderson already enjoyed a huge lead. Hinson cut into Henderson’s lead each lap and caught the leader with one to go. Hinson’s last shot was coming off of turn four heading to the checkers, but a little slip gave Henderson all the advantage he needed to take the win. Jeremy Geddings finished third with Dylan Wolfe fourth and Dale McLendon fifth.

Action continues at South Alabama Speedway on May 22, with the Viper Series Diamondback 100 Pro Late Model race. Also on the night’s schedule are feature races for the local Vintage, Street Stock, Coyote, and Mini Sportsman classes. It will be regular admission for the night, just $7.50 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 6-12.
