Wolfe Picks Up Roadrunner Win at SAS

By Mark Chisum

Mike Wolfe picked up his first win in the Roadrunner Division last Saturday night at South Alabama Speedway. Wolfe took the lead on the second lap when Ricky Strickland and Danny Monaghan got together in turn four resulting in Strickland spinning. Both were sent to the rear and Wolfe took the lead. Chris Yeakos began pressuring Wolfe and got past the leader on lap sixteen. However, as they headed to the stripe, Bobby Rhodes spun in front of them. Yeakos was able to dodge the spinning Rhodes, but the yellow put Wolfe back in the lead. This time, Wolfe kept Yeakos behind him to take the win. Strickland finished third, followed by Monaghan and Rhodes.

In the Super Stock feature, Jody Henderson took the lead on the third lap and outran Ryan Redmon to take the win. Kyle Sims took the lead on the first lap with Jason Fowler taking over on lap two. Henderson got inside of Fowler on the third circuit to grab the lead. Redmon followed Henderson past Fowler and kept Henderson close all race. Henderson kept Redmon a car length behind all race to pick up the win. Fowler was third with Cameron Henderson fourth and Sims fifth.

In the Modified feature, Heath Mills took the lead on lap eight and went on to win. Korey Ruble took the early lead from the pole and quickly put a gap on the field. Mills moved into second after racing side by side with Lance Blacker. Once Mills cleared Blacker, he began closing the gap on Ruble. Mills moved inside of Ruble on lap seven, just as Ruble slowed with mechanical problems. With Ruble out of the race, Mills pulled away from the field and cruised home with the win. Blacker finished second with Jacob Permenter third. Ruble was credited with fourth.

Kyle Sims took the lead on the second lap and held off Cameron Henderson to take his first win of the year. Henderson was fighting a loose race car all race. He could catch Sims, but slipped, letting Sims pull away. As the laps ran down, Henderson had one last shot at Sims. With two laps to go, Henderson was on Sims bumper, but as the pair exited turn four, Henderson turned sideways, giving Sims the advantage he needed. Sims beat Henderson to the line by three car lengths to capture the win. Dennis Thomas was third with Johnny Otto fourth and Billy Maxie fifth.

Travis Slawson used the outside line to get past early leader Jason Monaghan. Monaghan grabbed the lead from the pole and led the first seven laps. Slawson, starting eighth, made his way to second by lap three. He erased the lead Monaghan had built, but with Monaghan hugging the inside, Slawson went to the outside. It took Slawson several laps before he could complete the pass. Slawson then had to turn his attention to Lee Rogers, who was closing the advantage Slawson enjoyed. Slawson was able to keep enough distance between himself and Rogers and took the checkers by a car length. Monaghan finished third. Rusty Locklar and Kevin Bishop rounded out the top five.

Greg Adams moved inside of Chase Berry on lap 15 and went on to win the CupLites Feature. Berry grabbed the lead from the pole and held off Adams for the first fourteen laps. Adams tried on several occasions to get past the leader, but Berry held him off. Finally, as they headed out of turn four on lap fourteen, Adams got the grip he needed to get inside of the leader. Adams completed the pass going into turn one. Adams held off a late race charge by Zac Wallace to take the checkers. Berry crossed the line third, followed by Waylon Spivey and Karl Williams.

After having problems with his car in practice, Jason Cannon jumped into another car and led flag to flag to take the Mini Sportsman Feature win. Cannon led Dylan Wolfe by seven car lengths as the checkers fell. Eddy Hinson came from the eighth starting spot to finish third. Jeremy Geddings was fourth with Joshua Sibley fifth.

Next up at South Alabama Speedway is the June 12 Pro Late Model Viper Series Canebrake 100.
