Ruble, Odom Step Out of Late Models for SAS Wins

By Mark Chisum

Korey Ruble and Brandon Odom are two of the frontrunners in South Alabama Speedway’s Viper Series for Pro Late Models. But when not racing the Late Models, both have rides in local classes. Ruble drives a Modified, while Odom sits behind the wheel of a Street Stock. Saturday night after their respective features, both were celebrating in Victory Lane.

In the Modified Feature, Cameron Henderson took the early lead from the pole. The racing up front was fantastic, with Henderson, Kevin Peel, Donald Crocker, Heath Mills, and Lance Blacker running in a tight group. The pack got a little too close on lap eight when Crocker got into the back of Peel, sending Peel spinning. Both were sent to the rear of the field, moving Ruble into second. After the restart, Henderson was able to hold Ruble off for a couple of laps before Ruble moved inside to take the lead. Mills followed a couple laps later, but couldn’t keep pace with Ruble, who stretched his lead each lap. Crocker worked his way back up to third before laps ran out. Mike Daniels was fourth with Blacker fifth.

In the Street Stock Feature, Odom was running third but took over the lead when the two leaders spun. Chris Lucas took the lead from the pole and led the first 16 laps, but had to battle Chris Salter every lap. While battling for the top spot on lap 17, Lucas and Salter got together, bringing out the caution, and sending both to the rear. Odom took over the point and held off a charging Jody Henderson to take the win. Johnny Otto came from the eighth starting spot to finish third. Salter came back to take fourth, followed by Billy Maxie.

Kim Bishop picked up another Roadrunner win, taking the lead on lap nine. Chris Yeakos led the first eight laps before Bishop sped by. Yeakos kept Bishop close but couldn’t mount another challenge for the lead. Mike Wolfe crossed the line third, with Rick Thompson and Nick Petrie rounding out the top five.

In the 35-lap Coyote Feature, Rusty Locklar took the lead on the third lap ran away with the win. Danny Thompson led the first two laps before Locklar took control. Once out front, Locklar cruised home with the win. Tony Tidwell was second with Dustin Jowers third. Dylan Wolfe finished fourth and Lee Rogers finished fifth.

Greg Adams led all 15 laps to take the CupLite Feature win. Karl Williams was second, followed by Carroll Williams and Jack Whittle.

The Mini Sportsman Feature came down to the final lap with Eddy Hinson celebrating the win. Cameron Henderson grabbed the early lead, but began to trail smoke about five laps into the event. Henderson’s engine finally gave out on lap 14 and Hinson took over the lead. After a caution period for Henderson’s trouble, Dustin Monday dipped inside of Hinson to take over the point. Monday was able to gain a small advantage over Hinson, but slipped in turn two on the final lap. Hinson dove underneath and took the lead and held Monday off for the win. Lon Howell came from the seventh starting spot to finish third. Joey cannon was fourth with Dale McLendon fifth.

South Alabama Speedway will be closed July 4th Weekend, but will reopen on July 9 with the Pro Late Model Viper Series Pigmy 100 headlining the night’s schedule. Also on the schedule are heats and features for the Modified, Roadrunner, Coyote, CupLite, and Mini Sportsman classes.
