Sims Wins Street Stock Feature at South Alabama

By Mark Chisum

Kyle Sims picked up a hard earned win in Saturday’s Street Stock Feature at South Alabama Speedway. Jamie Ater took the early lead from the pole with Sims following from the third spot. Ater enjoyed a two car length lead early in the race, but Sims closed the gap during the middle stages. On lap 12, Sims tried to get inside of Ater as they headed into turn three. The two touched with Sims getting the bad end of the contact. Before Sims could regain control, Ater had sped away and Cameron Henderson had pulled even with him on the inside. Sims was able to pull back ahead of Henderon and a caution on lap 16 brought him back to Ater’s bumper. On the restart, Sims got inside of Ater on the back stretch, but when Ater slammed the door, both went spinning. Because a lap had not been completed, both regained their spots.

When racing resumed, Sims got inside of Ater and they raced side by side for five laps, swapping the lead at the line. Henderson was on their bumpers, trying to decide which one to go with. On lap 20, Sims was able to clear Ater and pulled away to score the win. Ater was able to keep Henderson behind him to finish second. Billy Maxie was fourth with Johnny Otto fifth.

In the Super Stock Feature, Corbitt Mosely led flag to flag to take the win. Mosely was pressured all race by Ryan Redmon, who stayed glued to Mosely’s bumper all race. Mosely drove a steady race, never making a mistake that Redmon could take advantage of. Jody Henderson was involved in the battle up front early in the race, but right rear tire problems resulted in him spinning out of contention on lap 13. Redmon made one last effort on the final lap, but came up short at the line. Henderson returned to the race and finished third. Jason Fowler finished fourth, followed by Jamie Ater.

Redmon came back later in the evening to take an easy win in the Modified Feature. Kevin Peel grabbed the early lead from the outside pole. Redmon quickly came through the field from the sixth starting spot. On the third lap, he passed Heath Mills to take over the second spot. After the races only caution on lap five, Redmon went to the outside of Peel on the restart to grab the lead. From there, Redmon cruised home. Peel was second with Mills third. Lance Blacker finished fourth and Randy Herrick fifth.

Kip Whitehead led flag to flag to win the Vintage Feature. Jamie Ater chased Whitehead all race, but couldn’t get close enough to challenge for the lead. Whitehead led Ater across the stripe by two car lengths at the checkered flag. Steve Stewart finished third, followed by Randy Herrick and Jeff Rudd.

In the Roadrunner Feature, Ricky Strickland took the lead from Jason Monaghan on the third lap and held off Chris Yeakos to take the win. Monaghan grabbed the early lead from the pole but Strickland got by on lap three to take the lead. Yeakos followed Strickland past Monaghan to take second and began to challenge Strickland’s position. Strickland drove a steady race and kept Yeakos behind him until the finish. Mike Wolfe finished third with Monaghan fourth and Bobby Rhodes fifth.

Lee Rogers came from the eighth starting spot to win the Coyote Feature. As in the Roadrunner Feature, Monaghan was the early leader, this time leading the first half of the 25-lap race. While Monaghan was enjoying his lead, Rogers was busy with Travis Slawson in a battle for the second spot. Rogers finally pulled away from Slawson and ran Monaghan down. Rogers caught Monaghan and went to the outside to make the pass. Once out front, Rogers pulled away to take the win. Slawson also used the outside line to get past Monaghan to finish second. Monaghan held onto third. Rusty Locklar and Joseph Chandler rounded out the top five.

Zak Wallace came from the seventh starting spot to take the win in the CupLite Feature. Jeremy Peacock led the first four laps before Wallace took control. Wallace survived five cautions and restarts and held off a late charge from Greg Adams to take the win. Chase Berry finished third. Jack Whittle was fourth and early leader Peacock fifth.

In the Mini Sportsman Feature, Eddy Hinson took the lead from Joshua Sibley on lap five and went on to win. Joey Cannon Led the first two laps before Sibley took the point. Sibley held the lead for two circuits before Hinson took charge for good. Jeremy Geddings followed Hinson through the field to finish second. Sibley slipped back to third in the final rundown. Dylan Wolf finished fourth and Cannon fifth.

The next scheduled race at South Alabama Speedway is the July 10 Super Late Model event. Local features will also be on the night’s schedule. For more information, contact the track at (334) 565-3539, or visit the track’s web site at www.southalabamaspeedway.com.
