Super or Pro – Doesn’t Matter to Pollard

By Mark Chisum

Bubba Pollard has pretty much dominated South Alabama Speedway’s Viper Series for Pro Late Models. In Saturday’s Super Late Model 100, Pollard didn’t miss a beat, taking the lead on the third lap and leading the rest of the way.

Pollard set a new track record in qualifying with a lap of 15.092, eclipsing Augie Grill’s record of 15.098 set March 7, 2009. Pollard drew a one to retain the pole position, but Dale Little got the jump from the outside to grab the early lead. Little led the first two laps before Pollard took over. Pollard eased away from the field as Little and Jason Hogan battled for the second spot behind him. Hogan worked his way around Little on lap eight to take the spot. Pollard had built a commanding lead, but Hogan began slicing into that lead and closed to Pollard’s bumper when the caution flew on lap 33.

When racing resumed, Pollard again showed his strength and pulled away from Hogan. The field settled in and Pollard led Hogan, Little, Chris Davidson, and Keith Cahela to the half way point. Little’s night came to an end eight laps past the half way point due to engine problems. The race remained green until lap 81 when Chase Oliver spun, closing the field. Once again, Pollard pulled away from Hogan. Davidson had made his way to the third spot as the race moved into the final ten laps. Davidson ran Hogan down and with five laps to go, used a lapped car as a pick to gain the advantage over Hogan.

Pollard led Davidson by over four seconds when the checkers fell. Hogan held on to third, followed by Cahela and Dave Mader III

In the Modified Feature, Heath Mills took the lead on lap six and cruised home with the win. Donnie Hamrac led the first five laps before Mills took over. Once out front, Mills built a huge lead and beat Hamrac to the line by over half a straightaway. Kevin Peel finished third, followed by Ricky Brooks and Lance Blacker.

The Street Stock was the night’s most entertaining race. Jamie Ater survived a flat tire and came back to take the win. Johnny Otto took the early lead and led the first eight laps. Billy Ammons took the lead on lap nine but had to battle Ater to keep the spot. The pair battled side by side for several laps, swapping paint on occasion. Ater cut a tire down in the battle and had to go to the pits for a new Hoosier, rejoining the field at the rear. Ammons continued to lead, but again had to battle for the spot. This time, it was Kyle Sims racing side by side with Ammons. This battle ended after contact sent Ammons spinning and Sims sailing off the track and into the adjoining filed. Ammons had to pit for repairs and went to the rear. Otto took back the lead, but only for a lap as Ater took over with four laps to go. Ater led the remaining four laps to take the win. Ammons worked his way back to second before the checkers flew. Otto finished third. Dennis Thomas finished fourth with Darrell Cawley fifth.

Lee Rogers took the lead on lap 10 and went on to win the Coyote Feature. Joseph Chandler grabbed the early lead from the outside pole. Rogers, starting on the pole, didn’t get off to a good start, falling back to third. He quickly recovered and moved back to second by lap five. Rogers got a good jump on a lap ten restart and pulled inside of Chandler to take the lead. Max Nelson followed Rogers to take over the second spot. Nelson chased Rogers the rest of the way, but couldn’t keep up with Rogers’ fast pace. Late in the race, Nelson had to turn his attention to Chandler who was trying to steal away the runner up spot. While Rogers was taking the checkered flag, Nelson was able to hold off Chandler to take second. Jason Monaghan was fourth with Rusty Locklar fifth.

Zak Wallace came from the ninth starting spot to capture the CupLite Feature win. Jack Whittle led the first 18 laps before Wallace took over. Greg Adams came from the eighth starting spot to finish second, two car lengths behind Wallace. Whittle slipped back to third in the finishing order. Karl Williams and Chase Berry rounded out the top five.

Eddy Hinson picked up another win in the Mini Sportsman Feature. Hinson started tenth but quickly came through the field and took the lead on the fourth circuit. Hinson pulled away from the field and took the win over Dylan Wolfe. Joshua Sibley was third, Mike Wolfe fourth, and Jason Cannon fifth.

Action continues at South Alabama Speedway on July 31 with a full card of local racing. Eight local features are on the schedule for the evening.
