Bishop Takes Eighth Straight Roadrunner Feature

Kim Bishop is on a roll at South Alabama Speedway. After spinning out of the lead in the season opening Rattler Roadrunner Feature, Bishop has taken the checkered flag first in every feature since, taking his eighth in a row Saturday night.

Ricky Strickland took the initial leas from the pole position and led the first three laps. Bishop quickly made his way from the seventh starting spot to the front, moving into second by lap three. On lap four, Bishop moved into the top spot. Strickland and Chris Yeakos were able to keep Bishop in sight, but couldn’t catch the leader. Bobby Rhodes finished fourth with Rick Thompson fifth.

Heath Mills led all 25 laps to take the win in the Modified Feature. Mills started on the pole and grabbed the lead over Mike Daniels as the field headed into turn one. Mills stretched his lead during a long green period, but a lap 19 caution put the field back on his bumper. When the green flew again, Mills sped away to take the win. Daniels finished second, a half straight away behind the winner. Lance Blacker finished third, followed by Cameron Henderson and Kevin Peel.

Brandon Odom took the win in the Street Stock Feature, after a late race battle with Chris Lucas. Lucas grabbed the early lead over Chris Salter. Odom moved from the seventh starting spot to second by lap three. He closed the small gap Lucas had built, and began to look for a way past the leader. Lucas held his ground for most of the race, but with four laps to go, Odom pulled to the inside of Lucas. The pair battled side by side, taking the white flag nose to nose. With the inside position, Odom was able to take the spot as they exited turn two. Jody Henderson finished third, with Johnny Otto fourth, and Slater fifth.

Joseph Chandler picked up his first Coyote Feature win of the year. Danny Thompson led the first five laps before Chandler took over. Chandler built a comfortable lead which was erased with a lap 16 caution. Chandler got a good jump on the restart and again pulled away from the field. Rusty Locklar moved into second on lap 18 and cut into Chandler’s lead, but couldn’t get close enough to mount a challenge. Lee Rogers came from the tenth starting spot to finish third. Tony Tidwell and Thompson were fourth and fifth.

Jack Whittel led all 25 laps to win the CupLite Feature. Waylon Spivey chased Whittle all race, but had to settle for second place. Karl Williams was third, followed by Carroll Williams and Gordon Reese.

In the Mini Sportsman Feature, the official finish was different than the way the cars crossed the stripe. Joshua Sibley led all 20 laps to take an apparent win. Dustin Monday and Cameron Henderson followed Sibley across the line, with Eddy Hinson and Dale McLendon fourth and fifth. However, Mini Sportsman officials disqualified Sibley for comments made in Victory Lane. Henderson was “dq’d” for being too light. The official finish listed Monday as the winner, Hinson second, and McLendon third. Lon Howell moved into fourth, with Kenny Younce fifth.

Action continues August 6 at South Alabama Speedway with the Pro Late Model Viper Series Copperhead 100. Also on the night’s schedule are a 35-lap Modified Feature, plus four other local features.
