Full Night at South Alabama Speedway

By Mark Chisum

South Alabama Speedway had a full night of racing scheduled Saturday night with feature races in all eight local classes.

In Super Stock action, Ryan Redmon finally broke into the victory column after finishing second four times this season. Redmon started third, but got past pole sitter Jason Fowler on the first lap and went toe to toe with Jessie Reid. The pair battled side by side for five laps, swapping the lead back and forth. Redmon, on the inside, finally cleared Reid to take the lead for good on lap five. From there, Redmon pulled away from his competitors. Reid chased Redmon the rest of the way, his last shot coming after a caution with two laps to go. Redmon got a good restart and pulled away for the win.

Kevin Peel led flag to flag to win the Modified Feature. Peel started on the outside pole but took the lead at the start. Ryan Redmon came from the fourth starting spot to challenge Peel, but settled for second. Heath Mills finished third, followed by Lance Blacker and Chris Brannon.

In the Vintage Feature, Kip Whitehead took the lead on the second lap and went on to win. Jamie Ater finished second, but never challenged Whitehead for the lead. Steve Stewart led the first lap, but fell back to third at the finish. Ricky Solomon finished fourth.

Jamie Ater took the lead on lap four and held off Cameron Henderson to win the Street Stock Feature. Justin Killian took the early lead from the pole and led until Ater took over on the third lap. Henderson moved into second on lap five and pressured Ater the rest of the way. Ater was able to keep Henderson behind him to take the win. Dennis Thomas finished third with Darrell Cawley Jr. fourth and Billy Maxie fifth.

In the Roadrunner Feature, Chris Yeakos and Mike Wolfe had a tight battle for the win with Yeakos coming out the victor. Michael Smith led the first lap with Danny Monaghan taking over for the next five laps. Yeakos came from the fifth starting spot to take the lead on lap seven. Wolfe moved into second on lap nine and erased Yeakos’ lead. Wolfe tried to find a path around the leader, but Yeakos kept him at bay and took a hard earned win. Monaghan finished third, with Ricky Strickland fourth and Bobby Rhodes fifth.

Max Nelson came from the fifth starting spot to take the win in the Coyote Feature. Joseph Chandler took the lead from the pole and led the first six laps before Nelson came to the front. Once out front, Nelson pulled out to a comfortable lead. The lead was erased twice by cautions, but each time, Nelson eased ahead of the field. Lee Rogers came from the ninth starting spot to finish second, but couldn’t keep pace with Nelson. Chandler held off Travis Slawson to finish third. Joey Locklar was fifth.

In the CupLite Feature, Greg Adams took the lead on lap fiftheen and went on to win. Rick Northey grabbed the early lead from the outside pole and led the first nine lap before slowing and retiring from the event. Jeremy Peacock took over the point and led for five laps before Adams took control with ten laps to go. Jack Whittle moved into second on lap 16 but could only watch from behind as Adams took the checkers. Waylon Spivey finished third, followed by Karl Williams and Peacock.

Eddie Hinson came from the eleventh starting spot to win another Mini Sportsman Feature. Cameron Henderson led the first three laps before Joey Cannon took over the top spot. Hinson was working his way through the field, however, and got past Cannon on lap nine. Hinson eased away from the field and led Cannon to the checkered flag by several car lengths. Henderson was third. Dylan Wolfe and Donnie Howell rounded out the top five.

Action continues this Saturday with the Pro Late Model Viper Series Copperhead 100. Also on the night’s schedule are feature races for the Street Stock, Roadrunner, Coyote, and Mini Sportsman classes.
