Henderson Doubles Up at South Alabama

By Mark Chisum

Cameron Henderson visited Victory Lane twice Saturday night at South Alabama Speedway, winning the Super Stock and Street Stock Feature races.

In the Super Stock Feature, Henderson took the lead on lap two and outran the field by half a lap. Corbitt Mosely led the first lap before Henderson, who started fifth took over, with Mosely sliding to the outside and back to fourth. With the race going green the distance, Henderson eased away from the field. The race was for second, with Mosely, Ryan Redmon, and Darryl Rudd battling for the position.  Mosely worked his way back to second with Redmon taking third and Rudd fourth. Jason Fowler finished fifth.

Henderson also cruised in the Street Stock race. Chris Salter took the early from the pole. Henderson, starting eighth, quickly made his way through the field, moving into second by lap four, just before the races first caution flew. On the restart, Henderson got by Salter to take the lead. Henderson had to survive three more caution periods before securing the win. Johnny Otto came from the seventh spot to finish second. Todd Valdez finished third, followed by Darrell Cawley, Jr., and Justin Killian.

The Modified Feature took a sudden turn in the final five laps, with the dominate car ending up in the wall, and a pass for the win in the final three laps. Ryan Redmon and Ricky Brooks battled side by side for the lead early on. Redmon led the first lap with Brooks beating him to the line the next two. Redmon finally cleared Brooks and pulled away, leaving Brooks, Heath Mills, and Lance Blacker to battle for second. Redmon was cruising in the race, leading by a straightaway over Brooks, Blacker, and Mills. With four laps to go, Jacob Permenter spun exiting turn. Redmon contacted Permenter and ended up in the outside wall. Brooks went between the two, but Blacker slid into Redmon. Redmon, Blacker, and Permenter were through for the evening. Brooks led the field back to green with Mills on his bumper. As they headed off turn four with three laps to go, Mills pulled to the inside and took the lead. Mills led Brooks, Todd Blackburn, James Evans, and Bruce Permenter to the checkered flag.

Jessie Smith held off Kip Whitehead to take the win in the Vintage Feature. Smith led all 20 laps, but a persistent Whitehead made him work every lap to keep the lead. Smith was able to keep Whitehead behind him to take the hard-earned win. Ricky Solomon, Jamie Ater, and Randy Herrick rounded out the top five.

Jason Singletary took the lead on the third lap and went on to an easy win in the Roadrunner Feature. Chris Yeakos closed the early gap Singletary had on the field, but never seriously challenged the leader. Ricky Strickland was third, followed by Mike Wolfe and Danny Monaghan.

Travis Slawson took the lead at the halfway point and went on to win the Coyote feature. Jason Monaghan led the first four laps, taking the lead from the outside pole. Joseph Chandler took over the point on lap five. Chandler led the next four laps until Lee Rogers got by to take the lead. As the pair crossed the finish line completing lap eleven, contact sent Rogers around. Both were sent to the rear, giving the lead back to Monaghan. After the restart, it took Slawson one lap to work his way around Monaghan to take the lead. Slawson led the rest of the way to collect the winner’s purse. Chandler worked his way back to second with Monaghan taking third. Rusty Locklar and Michael Piland rounded out the top five.

Greg Adam worked his way from the seventh starting spot and led just the final three laps to win the CupLite feature. Zak Wallace took the lead from the pole and led the first 22 laps before Adams run him down and made the wining pass. Wallace held on to second with Rick Northey third, Waylon Spivey fourth, and Karl Williams fifth.

Joey cannon and Eddy Hinson had a race long battle for the Mini Sportsman Feature win. Cannon led the first sebven laps before Hinson took over to lead lap eight. Cannon fought back to lead lap nine with Hinson taking the lead the next lap. Hinson led until the final turn when Cannon dove underneath Hinson and beat Hinson to the line to take the win. Dylan Wolfe crossed the line third, followed by Jason Cannon and Mike Wolfe.

South Alabama Speedway will be closed the next two weekends. The track will reopen on September 11 with the Pro Late Model Viper Series Cottonmouth 100.
