Rogers Lasts Long Enough to WIn

By Mark Chisum

For Lee Rogers, it was a good thing the Coyote Feature at South Alabama Speedway was only 25 laps. If it was 26 laps, he probably wouldn’t have been around at the end.

Rogers started on the pole, but outside pole sitter Joseph Chandler got the jump on the start and took the lead going into turn one. Rogers stayed glued to Chandler’s bumper through the first part of the feature. On lap 16, Rogers made his move inside of Chandler to grab the lead. Rusty Locklar followed Rogers past Chandler, and challenged Rogers for the top spot. The final of five cautions flew with four laps to go, bunching the field for a four lap sprint. Rogers and Locklar jumped out in front of the field. Locklar got under Rogers, but Rogers battled back to maintain his lead and led Locklar to the checkered flag. Danny Thompson followed in third with Chandler fourth and Perry Patino fifth. To celebrate his win, Rogers pulled up on the front stretch to get the checkered flag and take a well deserved victory lap. However, as he put his car in gear, it shuttered and wouldn’t move, due to problems with the drive axle.

Brandon Howell returned to Victory Lane after the Modified Feature, dominating the event. Howell took the lead from the pole and never looking back. With the race going green all 25 laps, Howell stretched his lead to a full straightaway. Cameron Henderson came from the eighth starting spot to finish second. Henderson was able to cut a little off of Howell’s lead, but was never in position to mount a challenge for the lead. David Capps finished third. Terry Malone was fourth with Rick McCarson fifth.

In Street Stock, Chris Lucas once again dominated the race, taking the lead on lap five a pulling away for an easy win. Billy Maxie led the first four laps before Lucas took over. Chris Slater came from the fifth starting spot to finish second, but was several car lengths behind Lucas. Darrell Cawley Jr. finished third, followed by Johnny Otto and Dennis Thomas.

Ricky Strickland took the lead on lap eight and held off a late challenge from Kim Bishop to win the Roadrunner Feature. David Daniels grabbed the early lead and was able to hold Strickland off for several laps. Strickland finally was able to drive around Daniels on the outside to grab the lead. Daniels kept Strickland close as Bishop closed in. Bishop spent several laps working his way around Daniels, but finally made the pas with four laps to go. Bishop quickly erased Strickland’s small lead and turned up the pressure. Strickland was able to hold off Bishop’s challenge to take the win. Daniels followed in third. Mike Wolfe took fourth with Jody Davis fifth.

In the CupLite Feature, Jason Fowler led all 25 laps to take the win. Greg Adams, making his first start of the season, came from the tenth starting spot to finish second. Waylon Spivey was third, Cory Tillman fourth, and Rick Northey fifth.

Donnie Howell took his second straight Mini Sportsman Feature win. Lon Howell led the first two laps before Adam Salter took over the lead for six laps. Donnie Howell took the lead on lap nine before Lon Howell battled back to lead lap 11. Donnie Howell retook the lead for good on lap twelve. Lon Howell took runner-up honors. Salter was third, followed by Chris Malloy and Weston Spivey.
