Daniels Claims Modified Feature at South Alabama Speedway

By Mark Chisum

South Alabama Speedway’s 2010 season is coming to a close with the last, full night of local racing held this past Saturday. Mike Daniels picked up his first win of 2010, winning the Modified Feature.

Daniels, starting on the pole, led all 25 laps to take the win, but had to deal with Heath Mills all race. Mills started outside of Daniels, but Daniels gained the advantage at the start of the race. Mills was able to keep Daniels I his sights, but could never make a serious bid for the position. As the race wore on, Daniels was able to stretch his lead over Mills to take the win. Lance Blacker held off a determined James Patrick to take third. Patrick stayed glued to Blacker’s rear bumper lap after lap, even nudging Blacker on a couple of occasions, but had to settle for fourth. Kevin Peel rounded out the top five.

Cameron Henderson led flag to flag to win the Super Stock Feature. With the race going all green, Henderson was able to pull away from his competitors to score another victory. Behind him, Corbitt Mosely and Ryan Redmon were having a good battle for second. Redmon was able to keep pace with Mosely, but couldn’t find a path around Mosely. Mosely led Redmon by a car length as the checkers flew. Jason Fowler was fourth, followed by Travis Slawson.

Chris Salter had to hold off a late charge by Johnny Otto to win the Street Stock Feature. Salter took the lead from Billy Maxie on lap two and led the rest of the way, but Otto kept the pressure on Salter the whole way. Salter was up to the task, and never slipped, and Otto couldn’t get enough grip to get past Salter. Salter led Otto to the checkers by a car length. Cameron Henderson was third, followed by Maxie and Dennis Thomas.

Chris Yeakos pulled away from the field and cruised home with the Roadrunner Feature win. Two late race cautions closed the field to Yeakos, but each time, he pulled away to a comfortable margin. Ricky Strickland finished second with Mike Wolfe third. Bobby Rhodes and Le McManus finished fourth and fifth.

Lee Rogers took the lead on lap 12 and went n to capture another Coyote Feature winner’s trophy. Rusty Locklar took the early lead from the pole position. Rogers quickly made his way through the field, moving into second by lap seven. Five laps later, he moved past Locklar to take the top spot. Travis Slawson came from the sixth starting spot to second, but couldn’t run the leader down. Locklar held on to finish third. Joseph Chandler was fourth and Jason Monaghan fifth.

Greg Adams took the lead on lap three and went on to win the CupLite Feature. Waylon Spivey got a good jump on the start and grabbed the early lead over Adams. Spivey slipped just a bit exiting turn two on the third lap, and Adams slipped by on the inside. Adams built a comfortable lead after getting back to the front spot. However, as the race entered the later stages, Jack Whittle began to cut into Adams’ lead. Whittle ran out of laps before catching the leader, however, and finished second. Zak Wallace was third, followed by Rick Northey and Spivey.

In the Mini Sportsman Feature, Joshua Sibley took the lead with five laps to go to take the win. Jason Cannon grabbed the early lead from the pole. Sibley, starting seventh, steadily moved through the field, and moved into second on lap twelve. Four laps later, Sibley moved past Cannon to take over the lead. Sibley led the rest of the way and took the win over Eddy Hinson, Mike Wolfe, Joey Cannon, and Donnie Howell.

South Alabama Speedway will close out the 2010 season on October 16 with the Alabama 200. The headliner for the evening will be a 150-lap Pro Late Model event.
