Daniels Outduels Mills at South Alabama

South Alabama Speedway showed its appreciation to its fans Saturday night with Fan Appreciation Night. Mike Daniels and Heath Mills put on a show for the fans, battling all 25 laps of the Modified Feature. When the checkers flew, it was Daniels getting to the line first, and winning the race.

Mills started on the pole with Daniels on the outside. The pair raced side by side for three laps. Mills led the first lap with Daniels edging him at the stripe to lead lap two. Daniels finally cleared Mills on lap four. Mills stayed on Daniels’ bumper the rest of the way. As the pair headed out of turn four on the final lap, Mills tried to dive under Daniels to steal the win but came up short. Lance Blacker finished third, followed by Cameron Henderson and Kip Whitehead.

In the Street Stock feature, Brandon Odom took the lead on lap five and cruised home with the win. Dennis Thomas led the field to the green and led the first lap before Johnny Otto took over. Otto led three laps before Odom took command. The race went green for the distance, and Odom eased away from the field to take an easy victory. Otto remained in second place, but couldn’t keep pace with the leader. Chris Lucas battled handling problems, but managed a third place finish. Todd Valdez came from the ninth starting spot to finish fourth. Jeremy Mack was fifth.

Kim Bishop came from the seventh starting spot to claim another Roadrunner victory. Rick Thompson grabbed the early lead from the outside pole and led the first three laps. Chris Yeakos came from the sixth starting spot and took the lead on lap four. Yeakos led until Bishop got by three laps later. Bishop led the rest of the way to take the win. Yeakos was headed for a second place finish but had a tire go down on the final lap and Ricky Strickland and Mike Wolfe got by to take second and third. Yeakos limped home fourth with Thompson sliding back to fifth.

In the Coyote feature, Rusty Locklar took the lead on lap twelve and went on to capture the win. Dustin Jowers grabbed the early lead and battled with Joseph Chandler for the front spot. Locklar, starting ninth, was quickly making his way through the field. He moved past Jowers at the halfway point and stretched his lead as the race went green for 25 laps. Chandler held on to second, followed by Tony Tidwell, Jowers, and Lee Rogers.

Greg Adams picked up another CupLite win, holding off a late charge from Jack Whittle. Larry Crutchfield led the first five laps before Adams worked his way by to grab the lead. Whittle followed two laps later and kept Adams in his sights all race. As the race neared its conclusion, Whittle carved away on Adams’ lead. Whittle made one last ditch effort to get past Adams, but Adams beat him to the line to take the win. Waylon Spivey used the outside groove to finish third. Crutchfield was fourth and Karl Williams fifth.

Dustin Monday grabbed the lead on a lap 13 restart and held off Eddy Hinson to take the Mini Sportsman Feature win. Jeremy Geddings led the first three laps with Donnie Howell taking over on lap four. Hinson raced into the lead on lap nine and led the field to the races first caution. On the restart, Monday got past Hinson to grab the front spot. Hinson tried to take the spot back, but Monday held him off to take the winner’s trophy. Geddings was third, followed by Howell and Karen Williams.

Action continues this Saturday with the Pro Late Model Viper Series Timber 100. Also on the night’s schedule are heats and features for the Street Stock, Roadrunner, Coyote, and Mini Sportsman classes.
